Skiing at Grand Geneva
One of the most popular Chicago-area ski resorts is Grand Geneva in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Just an hour and a half from the Windy City (even less if you live in the north suburbs), Grand Geneva attracts big crowds eager to ski on the 18 trails on three hills.
Grand Geneva is a great sport for night skiing – the resort is open until 10 pm daily. Lessons are available for beginners, and those without equipment can rent it out. The resort features a nice mix of beginner and advanced runs.
At the time of this writing, Grand Geneva offers discounted lift tickets for those who purchase online through their website. Grand Geneva also frequently offers weekday promotions to entice Chicago-area residents to come visit from Monday through Friday, when the crowds are smaller.
Interestingly, Grand Geneva started out in 1968 as the Playboy Club Hotel, one of Hugh Hefner’s properties, before changing to the Americana Hotel in 1982. In 1993 it was drastically renovated and rebranded as Grand Geneva. Forbes, Travel + Leisure and the Today Show have all sung the praises of Grand Geneva, so expect that the resort may be crowded on busy winter weekends.
As of the 13-14 winter season, a day pass (10 am to 10 pm) on a Friday through Sunday is $47 for adults and $38 for kids. You can save an extra $10 by showing up after 3 pm and purchasing a half-day ticket. From Tuesday through Thursday, full-day admission drops to $28 for adults and $23 for children. Cross-country trails are also available, with a day pass running $6.
During the summer, Grand Geneva remains open and is a popular destination for its golf courses, basketball courts, climbing wall, indoor water park, horseback riding and more.
